Our Trip To Richmond, Virginia

A few weeks ago, one of my friends from my college days mentioned her, and her family would be staying in Virginia for a few months, from their home state of Montana. So, we decided to schedule a long weekend, first stopping in Richmond, Virginia.

After driving one of our dogs, Kelsie aka Kells Bells to the K9 ranch, we drove about four hours from Charlotte, North Carolina to Richmond, Virginia. We arrived at our hotel, Virginia Crossings - and the first night went to The Tavern, a restaurant at the hotel for a light dinner before settling in for the evening.

The next morning, we strolled over to The Glen, a restaurant at the hotel for a breakfast buffet. The waitresses were especially friendly, and gave us coffee to go.

Notice the whitewash on the fireplace behind Cory, it gave me an idea for our fireplace at home.

After breakfast, we went to meet our friends at Maymont, the home of James and Sallie Dooley. The home is on one hundred acres of landscaped gardens perched above the James River. They lived in the home between 1893-1925 and it was decorated in opulent décor from the Gilded Age.

After touring the house, we went into the Japanese garden and the Italian garden.

Notice how the humidity poofed my hair.

After touring the gardens, we went to Buzz and Ned's and had BBQ. Cory carried on a conversation with six year old Percy, and it was too funny. We made arrangements to meet for breakfast at our hotel the next morning, then Cory and I went to Agecroft Hall. It's a period house that is perched above the James River, more than 3000 miles from it's original home, on the River Irwell in Lancashire, England.

Built in 15th Century, England for the Langley and Dauntesey families during the Tudor and Stuarts reign. The house was bought by prominent businessman T.C Williams Jr. and dismantled and shipped to Richmond, Virginia in the 1920's.

That evening, we returned to The Glen for a buffet dinner, and reflected on the historic homes we had visited that day. We were impressed at how historians, architects, and craftsman could take a period house, built over five centuries ago and rebuild it in Richmond, Virginia. Also, the large stained glass window arrived intact, not a scratch, or dent.

The next morning we met with my friend, and her family at our hotel for a farewell breakfast buffet. We were impressed at how well behaved their children were, and enjoyed hearing about their school. Although chilly, the skies were clear as we said our goodbyes, and got on the road and headed to Washington DC.

Thank you for this lovely visit to Richmond. I have only been there once, on our way to Williamsburg so I didn't really get to see much of Richmond.

Thanks for sharing with SYC.
