Our story of the Hurt family (my mother's paternal grandmother's line) goes back 303 years.
This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century "heorot", Middle English "hert", stag, male deer, and would have been given to a swift mover. The surname is first recorded in the mid 11th Century and can also be found as Harte, Heart, Hart and Hurt. [1]
There are no less than twenty Coats of Arms granted to this illustrious family, one of them being a shield divided per chevron blue and red, in chief a fountain and in base two gold hearts counter-trippant. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Aelfric Hort, which was dated circa 1060, in the "Olde English Byname Register", Hampshire, during the reign of King Edward, known as "The Confessor", 1040 - 1066. My memory of great-grandma Betty is from the summer of 1994 when our family moved from South Africa back home to England. She was a teeny-tiny, frail woman, and she had incurred a leg injury which disallowed her to bend one of her legs. My granddad took us to see her in her assisted living care home, and afterwards took us on a tour of all the places he grew up. I was only eight, so I have snippets of memories. After great-grandma Betty's funeral we were given many of her household belongings (as we'd just moved there). We also got this photo from my Nana's personal photograph collection when she passed.
Happy 303 years to the Hurt Family.
